The role of the MEMBERS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

We have 15 Advisers in Essex and our main job is to open new WIs – in the past year we have opened four and in a given period of two weeks we had 26 enquiries and many referrals from women who attended the Country Living Show in London. We do a lot of hidden work in trying to match up these women with WIs in their area.

Our other job is to help, encourage and support all the 227 WIs we have in Essex. If necessary, we sort out problems too and offer advice where needed. We also give talks, Chair Spring Group Meetings and attend Annual Meetings when we take sales items from the WI Centre to sell to members. (cheaper than the shops)

We also put on workshops to train Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, Programme Planners and Press Officers. We also have classes on speaking/microphone skills and IT. We steward at larger Federation meetings and most important, we participate in the training of new WI Advisers. Training, undertaken by the National Federation, takes about a year which includes two weekends of lectures, research and homework, going out and about with Advisers and finally a week long residential course at Denman College.

We are all volunteers but get paid mileage for all the visits we make – either by the WI that has asked us or by the Federation. The wellbeing of our WIs are of great importance to us and to this end we meet at the WI Centre every two months to keep in touch with each other, check progress and make plans.

We love the work we do, enjoy each others company and meeting all our loyal and dedicated WI members.

Group Clarification

Every WI is placed in a group of local WI's for the purpose of their Spring Group Meeting where one WI acts as convener and organises the meeting with the help of the other WI's in the Group.  This meeting has a 'special' speaker or good entertainer and sometimes an entertainment takes place as well as a speaker.  These Spring Group Meetings are a chance for the smaller WI to hear a speaker from further a field who they could not afford and also to meet up with friends from other WI's.  Competitions which are of help to those in need are often organised, items for hospitals and premature baby units and sewing kits for Africa etc.  When you add together all the items, Essex members really must make a difference!  The meetings usually have excellent refreshments and a good time is had by all.

Area Activities  are another group, quite separate from the Spring Group.  Any WI may belong to any Area Activities Group.  They were formed to give access to outings, classes and sport, enabling WI's  to join together.  Their finances are quite separate from any of the participating WI's.  Each Group is self-financing.

WI Advisers, although Advisers are allocated a certain number of WI Groups to look after, they are happy to give advice and guidance to any WI, if approached.

NEW WI'S

On 7th November some of the members from our new WI's came to the Federation.  They were able to see the offices and had the office procedures explained. We then held an informal meeting explaining about Links, Groups, Annual meetings etc.

Soup and roll, followed by cake was served before they departed.

All seemed to find the morning beneficial.

Part of the remit of the WI Advisers is to promote the WI

This picture of Liz Buxton was taken at Strawberry Fair in Brentwood in June 2009.

After "The Orient" our next event is Barleylands in Billericay on 12th/13th September.

‘How Far Does Yours Go?’

Do you remember us asking you how far your copy of the ‘Essex News’ travelled?  Well there is currently a copy being handed around in Australia .                    .  This is the farthest we have heard of one travelling, unless you know differently?
